( Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

What an amazing day it was at Chua Linh Quang today with #Hashtaglunch Bag.
Novotel sponsored the event.

We fixed one old ladies house and repaired her garden, she was thrilled. The group that did this worked so well and got everything done as well as a few extra jobs for her.
We taught English to an amazing amount of people both young and old (It was fabulous to see the older people trying to learn), we played games after English lessons, three legged races and balloon races, all ages joined in.There was lots of laughter.

We delivered 15 lots of rice, noodles, eggs and other staples to families that the master had selected as those needing the most help. The people who delivered these gifts were the people who helped buy, prepare and cook the lunch that we all ate with the local people. We got to hear some beautiful songs sung for us and then they thanked us for helping their community.
A little over 30 people came together to help this community and I think Together we made a difference.

Tu Bong Summer School Programs weeks Two 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên dưới )

We have made the end of week two of Summer School.

This week we learned about the body.
"Head, shoulders, knees and toes" song is always a great way to learn the basics.

Lisa taught the advanced class. They learnt about poems. A bit of a new concept for them. One of the students Huong, wrote an amazing story with "th" words for me to use to teach my class th sounds. With the help of three Swiss Nurses that are staying at the orphanage they made an amazing 3D human skeleton. Some of the students from the middle class from last year are in the advanced class and their enthusiasm is a wonderful thing to see.

Juanita taught the beginner group. Always a difficult job when they have no English at all but she is doing an amazing job. She is so passionate about teaching them. They are learning colours and the alphabet. They had a great time making their skeleton puppets.

I have been teaching the middle group. We have done months of the year, days of the week as well as the body. But they are making great strides in learning how to speak in simple sentences.
They loved their Skelton puppets as well.

We had a smell, touch and taste exercise where they were blindfolded and had to try to match smells and taste different things that were sweet, sour and salty. The lemon juice was not a hit 🙂. Amazingly they didn't think honey was sweet!

The cooking lesson was a real hit. We made egg custard and meringues. We lost power for 30 mins before the start of the cooking BUT it came back on just in time.

We couldn't have achieved what we have without the help of the amazing Vietnamese translators who have been travelling up and back on different days to help us. Some come for one day, some for two. All coming on their day off or going back after a morning session to their jobs in Nha Trang in the afternoon. Thank you very much for your help.

We have started making fruit yogurt and made egg custard for the babies. They love it. The afternoons after we finish teaching we have been getting them all outside on the slippery slide, in the sand pit and on Thursday we finished with outside "baths" in bowls. They had a ball splashing and making me very wet. I think a blow up pool might be purchased this weekend 🙂.

We are having a relax this weekend getting ready for next week. Can't wait to see what adventures we have....

Together we can make a difference.

A First Day Of Tu Bong Summer School in June 2017

Wow what a day it has been!!!

First day of the school. Just under 50 children came, we assessed them and first class is 8:00 am Tuesday. They all heard the rules of the school by Su Thong and everyone is very excited, children and teachers. We are all ready for first lessons and activities planned for each afternoon, games, painting, craft and cooking.
We celebrated Janny's birthday with a cake before they all went home so everyone got cake to eat (if only a little because so many people).
With a massive amount of work it will all happen and I know it will make a big difference to these children's lives.
We certainly couldn't have done it without the help of so many people. Juanita, Ian and Lisa, Mariska and Anton, Louise, Janny and of course my wonderful husband Steve.
Thanks to Kid Castle for the fabulous desks, books, clothes and pencils. The children will love them. 🙂
We have fans in all the rooms. Hopefully this will make it not so hot and more comfortable for everyone.

Together, we can make a difference.

Hashtaglunchbag at Tu Bong in 28th in May 2017

#HashtagLunchbag is held on the last Sunday of every month. It's where the community of Nha Trang come together to help the less fortunate. It was decided to change the normal format and this Sunday was the first time of the change.

The new plan is to chose 3 different destinations in the Khanh Hoa province and return every three months to each destination. This way we build a relationship with the people of the community by helping them with a project, teaching English to the children so they may have more employment opportunities in the future, as well as providing food supplies.

We went to Tu Bong to help the orphanage where we extended the garden, taught English to a lovely group of local children and gave food packages which included rice, noodles, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar and seasoning to a group of people who the Master of the Temple, Giac Hanh had selected. These food packages will sustain people for a lot longer than just a meal.

The people who worked in the garden did an amazing job. They exceeded all expectations. They finished more of the area than expected in the time allocated. It's now setup to get some more crops installed making the orphanage more self sustainable.

At the end of the English lesson the children gave a little speech about themselves using what they had learned. They were so proud after giving the presentations. They had such great support from both the other students and the volunteers. One little girl asked "Can I come again tomorrow?". Most of these children attended Summer School last year and hopefully will come again this year. It is fantastic to see how much they remembered and how eager they are to learn.

The group in the orphanage played with wooden puzzles and nursed the babies allowing the carers a much needed break.

After doing all this we joined together with the children that we taught and the people who received the food packages to have Banh Mi and then had a quick tour of the Temple grounds. Together we can make a difference and today we certainly did.

A quick trip up tu Tu Bong Orphanage with Juanita, Joe, Lisa, Ian, Janny in May 2017

We did a quick trip up to the orphanage to prepare for #Hashtaglunchbag coming up on Sunday.

I was joined by Lisa, Ian, Juanita, Janny and Joe (a friend of Janny's). Unfortunately Ailsa wasn't able to join us as she was feeling a little unwell and didn't want to share it with the children.

We were able to complete the sprinkler system in preparation for the gardening that will happen on Sunday and get all the tools ready.

Ba (one of the men at the temple) has completed one of the bookcases for the summer school. It looks amazing 🙂I'm very excited, hopefully soon we will be able to start setting up the rooms and putting all the books away properly.

Unfortunately most of the older children have colds and chest infections. 5 of the children had to go to hospital for high temperatures so they were all wanting cuddles.

The youngest babies all all healthy, Lộc had his first haircut. He looks like a real little boy now instead of a baby. He was so alert, looking around and smiling.

We had a great time. Lots of cuddles but it's never good to see the children unwell.

Can't wait to go up on Sunday with #hashtaglunchbag.

Together we can make a difference.

Ailsa, Juanita, Lisa, Ian visit to Tu Bong Orphanage in May 2017

I took up my Mother-in-law (Ailsa Brown) who is visiting from Australia for a few days up to the orphange to stayed for a night and we were joined by Lisa, Juanita and Janny. Ian came up for the day on Wednesday.

Ian and Lisa bought the wonderful carers a new outfit each, in celebration of Mother's Day, something that they were thrilled about. These ladies work so hard and they are mothers in the truest sense of the word, caring and loving even though the babies aren't theirs.

As always it was wonderful to spend time with the children. Ailsa found a new little friend in Trung who followed her around and loved sitting on her lap. Unfortunately he had a temperature so wasn't feeling well so he had lots of cuddles which he loved.

Juanita and Lisa did lots of work with Phuc which is fantastic.
We were able to take Ailsa around between the rain with the Master Giac Hanh taking us around in a car so she could see the temple grounds without getting too tired. This was fabulous because she wouldn't have seen everything without him. It is wonderful that he takes the time to spend with some of our visitors and he loved meeting Steven's Mom.

On the Wednesday while I was working in the classroom Giac Hanh came and got me very excited. We had just received a new baby. She is so tiny and beautiful. Her feet are quite long and she has lovely soft black hair.

This brings our happy family to 15 babies now! (10 boys and 5 girls)
Last year seemed to be the year of the boys but this year the girls are starting to come in 🙂
We now have 4 babies under 2 months. It is wonderful to watch the older children with the babies. They are very careful near them.

Ian and I went off to buy plumbing supplies to extend the watering system so we can expand our garden.
I wish we could have taken a photo. We bought back 12 lengths of 4 meter pipe, in the rain, on the motorbike. It was a great source of amusement for the local people.

Thank you very much to Ailsa, Lisa, Ian, Juanita and Janny for coming up. We had a great time, lots of laughter but lots of work done.

Max and Tina visit to Tu Bong orphanage in May 2017

I have some wonderful friends visiting from Australia, Max and Tina Kemsley are visiting Vietnam on a holiday and wanted to come up to the orphanage and help. I have had Max repairing toys and doing designs for extending the sprinkler system so we can extend the garden.

Duc really took to Max. He followed him around and loved lying in his arms. Tina had the twins hanging on to her. They were laughing and playing and having a great time.

We managed to get in time with the babies the next morning. We all got cuddles after morning baths, Lộc is so bright and smiling, Duyen is really strong and the new baby Thanh, she is so cute. They were awake for quite a while so we spent all the time we could with them.

We went for a walk around the temple and grounds in the late afternoon, it is a lot cooler. When we were walking back we ended up talking to Hai (novice monk), Su Ha and Su Uy for 30 mins practising English. We had a wonderful time, spending time with the children and walking around the beautiful grounds.

The day after we left we received a beautiful new baby. She has long legs, fingers and toes. Her name will be Tam.

Together we can make a difference.

Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa charity for April 2017

Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa charity for April 2017

Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa with Lanterns Restaurant help sponsor Tu Bong Orphanage each month. The money that they give helps pay for formula for the babies.

We have 12 children under the age of 2 1/2 years which adds up to a lot of formula. The new baby Duyen is doing very well she is eating and sleeping well, Loc is lifting his head and still has all his hair, Phuoc is rolling over and laughing and playing with the mobiles that we have been given.

Tai is walking well but Duc and Trong are still not walking. Trong is crawling really well and gets around very fast.

Hang and I went up for the day with Juanita to pay the wages and the bill for formula for the month and Juanita spent a lot of time with Phuc, exercising him and taking him around in the pram.

It was a special day for celebrating the building of the Female monk house in front of the orphanage and Hau, Hieu and Hien were wearing monk clothing and looked very cute. It is certainly making a difference having the extra carers with more time for gardening and spending time with the children especially with the younger babies.

If you would like to donate or volunteer you can do so through gofundme or contact Eileen at Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa and arrange an appointment so we can talk about what you would like to do.

Together we can make a difference.

Jaunita, Anton, Mariska, Lisa, Ian, Louise, Peter, Shane visit to Tu Bong Orphanage in April 2017

(Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

What an amazing day we had on Sunday. Took a great group of people up to the orphanage by car and extras came up on their bikes.

We did so much. Looked around, checked out the garden (the cucumbers are growing amazingly, eaten the first lot of vegetables and the moringa leaves have been incorporated in the children's food). The ladies have planted more vegetables and the whole area is growing really well.

We looked at the things for summer school and came up with many plans. It's getting there and we are all getting very excited with lots of great ideas being shared. We spent time with the children who were all very quiet, still a bit sick. Jaunita spent a lot of time with Phuc. He loved it.

The biggest surprise of all was we have a new baby! SHE arrived this morning, left outside the door of the lady monks house. Her name will be Minh Duyen (charming), she weights just 3.5kgs and she is gorgeous. Long legs, long toes and we think about 4 days old.

Lộc is very happy and growing quickly but Phuoc is the one who seems to be growing the fastest. I taught Hien how to blow kisses and he thought it was a great game. We had an amazing day.

Thank you Jaunita, Anton, Mariska, Shane, Peter, Louise, Lisa and Ian and of course Hằng for coming up. Together we can make a difference.

A Quick Trip to Tu Bong Orphanage April 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

I went to the orphanage for two days. During this time I was unpacking and cataloging some of the amazing teachers resources that Kate recently bought over from Australia. We have books, CD's, flash cards and many other things that we can use in our Summer School to teach the local children of Tu Bong. The local children don't have access to any of these kinds of materials and they will make an amazing difference. Hopefully not only will they learn some conversational English but have fun while doing it.

The children all have colds at the moment so lots of runny noses and coughs. While they may have been a bit cranky it meant that they wanted lots of cuddles and kisses, something that I'm always happy to give.

Young Phuoc was rolling, lifting his head up and so happy. He was having a wonderful time on the play mat looking and touching with the different mobiles.

I did some exercises with Phuc and I ended up with about 5 children sitting around me watching what I was doing but not coming near Phuc so not to harm him, they are so patient with him, he was having a wonderful time smiling and giggling. It was great to see him so happy and enjoying a lovely stretch.

Tai is walking and Duc is very close to walking now with Trong not far behind. Lộc is growing so big and still has that amazing head of hair.

Hau, Hien, Trung and Nghia ended up on the rocking horses after watching Bob the Builder DVD (which they loved) and they ended up having a bit of a race which was hilarious to watch.

Perhaps one of the happiest things for me is that hopefully we finally have some more staff to help the amazing Thuy, Ninh and Hoa who are endlessly patient and loving with all the children.

Together we can make a difference.

Allison, Ian, Bela Thao, Trung visit to Tu Bông Orphanage in April 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

I was contacted by a lovely lady through Withlocals.. com who wanted to go up to the orphanage to visit. Her name is Allison Laxa and she comes from California but is working in China at the moment as a Human Resources Assistant. Unfortunately I had planned to be in Da Nang at this time so my wonderful assistant Janny took her up with the help of Ian Lim. They were joined by three other people who also wanted to visit, Thao, a friend from Nha Trang, along with two of her friends who wanted to visit, Trung who is Vietnamese- Indian and another Vietnamese friend also by the name of Thao whose family lives near the orphanage.

When they were looking around the grounds of the Temple they were joined by Giac Hanh who took them up the mountain to see the amazing views. Unfortunately Ian had left to go and finish working on the fence around the sandpit so he missed going up the mountain again. One day he will make it up there
After a wonderful lunch made by Thuy, Ian and Trung fixed the watering system so the pumpkins don't need to be hand watered, they all took the children out to the sandpit.

It was the first time the weather had allowed this to happen. Hien didn't like the feel of the sand but after Janny showed the children how to play in the sand they enjoyed it especially Duc who loved playing with the shovels that Lorraine and Kevin had bought them. Trong, Duc and Nghia started to eat the sand, as children do, and I think the next few days will be interesting what comes out in their nappies....

Allison loved cuddling Baby Lộc, and everyone got to spend some great time with the children.
Thank you very much to everyone who were able to visit, Thao, Thao, Trung and Allison and a very special thank you to Janny and Ian for filling in for me, completing the fence around the sandpit and finishing the watering system. I hope you all had a great day. I am positive the children loved the time you spent with them and their first trip to the sandpit

Kate visit Tu Bong Orphanage in April 2017

(Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

Last year I met a lady who had come to our spa and invited me for dinner. She came up to the orphanage for a few days and fell in love and came back and helped me with the summer school last year. She really wanted to make a difference for the local children learning English.

Kate returned to Australia with a new passion. She began telling people about the orphanage, collecting donations, finding things we needed both at the orphanage and for the summer school, that we will have again this year for the local children.

With the help of Rotary in Australia, paying for some of the shipping, and Haison, a shipping company in Australia, many of whom the staff are Vietnamese. She has managed to bring over an overwhelming amount of things for both the orphanage and the summer school. Haison were an amazing help to Kate packing, shipping and arranging the customs clearance as well as assisting with the transport to Tu Bong.

We have been unpacking everything the last few days and I am overwhelmed by her generosity as well as the generosity of the people of Australia. We can't begin to thank Kate, Haison, Rotary and the people who have donated goods enough.

Please know that everything is very gratefully received and will be put to good use. We are getting very excited about starting the Summer school again this year. Some of the local children came and helped us unpack a bit and they were very excited to see everything.

Sue and Kevin visit to Tu Bong Orphanage on April 2017

Sue and Tony Baker are a wonderful couple who live in Australia and are friends of Lorriane Halse-Smith and Kevin Smith. Sue teaches Tesol courses in both Australia and overseas.

Sue and Tony are in Vietnam attending a Hash Harriers gathering and series of bike rides. The wonderful people from Hash have donated 7 700 000 VND to the orphanage from their event. Thank you all to Hash that made this wonderful donation especially Maureen Daniels who helped organise it and thought of us. Sue and Tony came up to the orphanage for two nights and helped me with many things.

They bought over many things from Australia from friends for the children, helped me unpack and test lots of things for the summer school, spend time with the children and do lots of extra jobs. It has been wonderful to have them helping.

On Sunday Duy and his friends, from Nha Trang also joined us, bringing up a gift of lots of rice and then they came and helped us with the unpacking and carrying heavy boxes to the orphanage and other classroom for me.

Tony was so patient checking and repairing all the Leap pads, something I could never do, and Sue's organising skills were fantastic. Together they work as a team and it is wonderful to watch.

Giac Hanh took us up the mountain to show the views which they loved. Spending time with the master is always a wonderful experience. The children loved spending time with Sue and Tony made some new friends with some of the local children teaching them English. It is wonderful to meet so many great people and make new friends. I'm sure we will stay in contact.

Thank you both for helping so much, you have made a huge difference.

Lorraine and Kevin visit to Tu Bông Orphanage in March 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

Lorraine and Kevin Halse, an Australian couple, came up to the orphanage and stayed with us for a night. In Australia apart from running a family day care Lorraine does fairy parties(she is known as Fairy Raine), paints fairy faces on children and Kevin plays Santa Claus to many worthwhile charities, makes balloon animals as well as working very hard raising money for many worthwhile causes. They are beautiful people with wonderful souls.

We had a great time. Giac Hanh, the master, took the time to take us up the mountain, Lorraine did very well and didn't look down once when we were reversing down the mountain. It is spectacular views when you get up so high.

They played so much with the children, making balloon animals, helping me put together tents and tunnels, helping to unpack things that a friend had bought over from Australia. I even put Kevin to work fixing up trellises for the cucumber plants that are growing so quickly. They were able to bring over many things from Australia to help us, sippy cups, teething rings, clothes and baby blankets. It was very sad to see them go, but I'm sure we will stay in contact.

Thank you both so much for coming up and helping us.

If you would like to donate or see more information about this orphanage please go to :

Malaysian Group with Top Team Visit Tu Bong Orphanage on March 2017

What a very big and busy day we had on Sunday 26-03-17

We hosted a group of 23 Malaysian students and two teachers with Top Team. They came up to the orphanage and temple for the day. We planted avocado and Jack fruit trees (for earth hour), sponsored by Top Team.

Everyone was greeted by Giac Hanh and Giac Thong and taken for a tour of the temple after receiving special stones. Some of the activities we did: Built a sandpit and a fence to go around it, so the children can go outside and play and get some Vit D.

Trimmed and harvested the Moringa Olifera trees. The leaves will be dried and made into a powder adding an amazing amount of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids to the children's diets (the seeds were given to me by Jacob who has been an amazing sponsor of the orphanage).

The students got vietnamese cooking lessons when preparing lunch and dinner Assembled 5 rocking horses for the children The students had also raised some money before they came and a few of them went to a local shop with me and bought a large supply of essential supplies such as sugar, salt, washing powder, formula, dishwashing liquid, 100kg of rice and many other things. They were also able to bring nappies with them, donation from VINDA group, SCA Hygiene Malaysia.

It was a jam packed day. We couldn't have done it without the very hard work of the amazing ladies at the orphanage led by Thuy, Steve and Ian directing and building the sandpit and fence, Hang and Tram who were everywhere and helped with everything and Giac Thong who led the tree planting with Louise assisting him.

We were joined in the afternoon by some of the local children, who were fascinated by everything we were doing, who got some english lessons as well.

Of course we squeezed in some time to play with the children and look around the grounds of the beautiful Temple. It was a real team effort, together we certainly made a difference.

Jonh and Els Visit to Tu Bong Orphanage in March 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên dưới )

I took some wonderful people John and Els De Vries, from Holland, up to the orphanage on Monday. They had contacted me through Withlocals. com.

John and Els stayed overnight with us. Els played with the children but really loved spending time with the babies and Phuc. John had a lot of fun teaching the older children soccer and running around with them, and all the children wanted to sit in the cupboard up high.

In the afternoon we had Hien, Hau and Hieu outside on the big slide. Hien and Hau had no fear going up and down but Hieu was a bit scared of heights.

The garden is growing quickly. Pumpkin, beans, okra, lettuce, cucumber are all growing well. I couldn't see any tomatoes but hopefully they will come up soon.

I would like to thank John and Els and Tram for coming up and spending time with us. It was wonderful to meet and spend time with such amazing people.

Together we can make a different.

Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa Charity for March 2017

Charity for Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa for March 2017

What a busy month it has been so far.

Pure Vietnam Beauty and Spa in conjunction with Lanterns Restaurant have sponsored money towards the buying of formula for the orphanage at Tu Bong but we have also been building a garden at the orphanage, so they can be more self sufficient in the future.

A group of 20 people volunteered to help us to build the garden including some students from Nha Trang University Hello English club as well as friends of ours. We planted pumpkin, tomatoes, cucumber, beans, lettuce and some other vegetables. We worked very hard digging the garden and then Steven and Ian were able to do some repairs to the watering system so now the vegetables will get proper watering. It will be very exciting to watch the vegetables grow.

We have a new baby at the orphanage who is doing very well. He has so much hair it is amazing.

All the other children are doing very well. Tai and Đức will be walking very soon and Phuc seems to be so much happier. Lisa Lim has been doing some work with him as well as the stretches we are doing and he is also up in the pram that Donna Marshall gave to us,he loves being able to see all the children better. It is wonderful to see the children pushing him around in the pram and him smiling.

Laurent Casternet and the staff at Intercontinental Hotel donated some toys, clothes and nappies which were very welcome. Tai, Đức and Trong especially loved the pig and lady bug soft toys.

We are very blessed to have so many people helping and working together so these children have a chance for a better future.

We would like to thank Lisa, Ian, Mariska, Antone, Louise, ... For helping us with the garden and Bela, Lisa, Ian and Hang for coming up with me the following week to plant some extra vegetables.

Together we can make a difference.

Charity Gardening at Orphanage with Mariska, Anton, Ian, Lisa and Hello English Group in March 2017

( Tiếng Việt Bên Dưới )

What a great day we had yesterday.

The weather was perfect. We loaded up a bus with a great group of people and a few bikes, with a stop for breakfast along the way we made it to Tu Bong before 9am. A brief play with the children and then we started our gardening.

It's amazing how hard the ground gets so quickly. It was quite hard work but we were able to make quite a few garden beds. Steven was able to fix the watering system so we had sprinklers to keep our vegetables growing. It got very hot very quick but everyone continued to work, joking and chatting making the time go so quickly.

The ladies at the orphanage cooked us a wonderful lunch even though there was no electricity, we had worked up a big appetite. We planted tomatoes and cucumber in the garden beds in front of the orphanage thanks to the hard work of Lisa, Louise, Dung and Mariska.

We planted pumpkin, beans, okra, bok choy and a herbal leaf in the gardens in the main area with more gardens ready for more vegetables in the weeks to come. The boys all worked so hard digging, it was a very full and busy day with an amazing amount of work done.

Even though everyone was tired and hot they still wanted to have a look around the beautiful grounds of the temple. We left at 6:30am and got back at 4:30pm a very tired, some a bit sunburnt, group of people.

We made new friends, practised some English, learnt about gardening but hopefully started the process that enables the babies to have better nutrition for a better future.

We couldn't have don't it without the help of all the wonderful volunteers who came with us. Thank you to Hải, Hiền, Thảo, Thế, Thoa, Liền, Sơn, Mimi, Janny, Lisa, Ian, Anton, Mariska, Louise Dung and Steve.

It will be so exciting to watch the vegetables grow.

Together we can make a difference.
