#HashtagLunchbag is held on the last Sunday of every month. It's where the community of Nha Trang come together to help the less fortunate. It was decided to change the normal format and this Sunday was the first time of the change.
The new plan is to chose 3 different destinations in the Khanh Hoa province and return every three months to each destination. This way we build a relationship with the people of the community by helping them with a project, teaching English to the children so they may have more employment opportunities in the future, as well as providing food supplies.
We went to Tu Bong to help the orphanage where we extended the garden, taught English to a lovely group of local children and gave food packages which included rice, noodles, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar and seasoning to a group of people who the Master of the Temple, Giac Hanh had selected. These food packages will sustain people for a lot longer than just a meal.
The people who worked in the garden did an amazing job. They exceeded all expectations. They finished more of the area than expected in the time allocated. It's now setup to get some more crops installed making the orphanage more self sustainable.
At the end of the English lesson the children gave a little speech about themselves using what they had learned. They were so proud after giving the presentations. They had such great support from both the other students and the volunteers. One little girl asked "Can I come again tomorrow?". Most of these children attended Summer School last year and hopefully will come again this year. It is fantastic to see how much they remembered and how eager they are to learn.
The group in the orphanage played with wooden puzzles and nursed the babies allowing the carers a much needed break.
After doing all this we joined together with the children that we taught and the people who received the food packages to have Banh Mi and then had a quick tour of the Temple grounds. Together we can make a difference and today we certainly did.
